The Tax Grind

By Levi Skinner

As an owner of a home based business, a person is also responsible for keeping track of everything they will need for filing their taxes. This is an aspect of the home based business opportunity which confuses many people, but one that is very important to understand and utilize.

Nobody wants to accidentally file something incorrectly or incompletely and risk being charged with tax fraud.

It is important to save everything related to your homebiz. There are a large number of items and services which are tax deductible when you own a home business. Part of your electric bill, rent or mortgage, and phone bill may be deductible since they are used for your business.

Part of your car payment and gas bill can also be deducted. You will want to keep track of all the mileage you put on your car, and keep your receipts when you fuel up. Keep track of which miles were for personal use (i.e. the grocery store or driving to work) and which were specifically used for your business. It is also, obviously, very important to keep track of your expenses and income related to your home based business. Keep all receipts from purchases that have anything to do with your work from home business. For example, when you buy ink and paper for your printer to print off advertisements, it is deductible. Business lunches can be partially deductible.

The cost of hardware and software relevant to your homebiz can be deductible.

However, keeping track of your income is equally important, if not more so. You need to be able to correctly report your earnings for the year to ensure you are paying the correct amount of taxes on your income.

Keep careful records and all original receipts of all sales you make.

Protect Yourself

By Levi Skinner

In the past several years, work from home businesses have become increasingly popular. Many people are drawn to the benefits of a home based business, such as being your own boss, setting your own hours, and the tax benefits you can receive. However, many of these home based business opportunities are scams. Before you get involved in a homebiz, as with any other serious business venture, you should carefully research the company and its product or service.

To start with, read through the company's website. See what claims they make as to the amount of money you can reasonably expect to make, and the opportunities for advancing yourself. You want to become familiar with the product or service the company offers. Speak to as many of the company's independent contractors as possible, to see how they feel about the product or service, as well as the business opportunity. They will be able to give you a lot of insight about the home business. Also, speak to current and former customers of the company to get their opinions of the product or service, and to find out what kinds of experiences they have had when dealing with the company.

After this step has been completed, you should check the company's record with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB can tell you how many complaints the company has received within a specific amount of time, exactly what types of complaints have been filed against the company, and how many of these complaints have been resolved, both successfully and unsuccessfully.

Knowing how the company responds to these complaints and how they treat their customers and prospective or current contractors is very important in helping to determine if this is a company you would like to work with.

Work It

Work It

By Levi Skinner

Many people would love to be able to build their own home business. The chance to be your own boss, set your own working hours, and be able to work in your pajamas if you wish is a huge draw to so many of us! However, many people forget that a home based business is just that...a business. There are many legitimate home based business opportunities, however, they are not get-rich-quick solutions. They require a lot of hard work and dedication, and at first will more than likely have a slow turn-around in profit. However, if a person is truly dedicated and willing to work hard, it is very possible to create a successful home business.

Another aspect of the home based business opportunity that is often forgotten is that with nearly all opportunities, you can not work solely from home. As a business owner, you are responsible for your own networking, marketing, and advertising. This means you will need to spend time out and about, putting up fliers, brochures, and whatever other advertising avenues you choose to use. You will need to talk to people. In a typical day, we speak to dozens of people, from cashiers at the supermarket, to gas station clerks, to our co-workers and neighbors. Every time you speak to another human being is a chance to promote your business.

The person you are speaking with may not be interested, but they know dozens of people, too, and they might know someone else who would be interested! It never hurts to talk to people...the worst they can do is say no.
